Editing in the Finance Niche

How many types of editors can you think of? Until 10 years ago, my answer would have probably been something like “Uh, the word kind, the image kind, and the video kind.”

After several years in the (word) editing field—and my first ACES conference—my answer has changed. The number seems infinite.

When I first started editing, my dream was to be a fiction editor. It still is and I’m living it. But there are other types of editing worth learning, and they can be both engaging and lucrative.

In April of this year, I went to the ACES conference in San Antonio. There, I met the following types of editors:

  • Medical editors

  • Content editors

  • News editors

  • Magazine editors

  • Fantasy editors

  • Sci-fi editors

  • Romance editors

  • Erotica editors

And that’s only a sample. But while I was there, I didn’t meet any other finance editors. I’m sure they were there (and probably hiding from my loud personality and louder outfits). When I got home, though, I wondered how many editors had never considered going into the finance niche.

Consider the possibilities. There are finance organizations like the CFA Institute and the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) that produce written materials and exams. There are finance websites and publications like Forbes and NerdWallet. There are individual CPAs and CFAs who produce copy for their websites.

There’s room for editors in finance, and although the learning curve can be steep, it’s worth it. If you’re interested in learning how to edit finance, here’s an infographic to get you started.
